Public History Intern
The Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA) is a fast-growing association of patients, family members and medical professionals impacted by this often misdiagnosed and difficult illness. PHA is committed to maintaining the organizations volunteer spirit and to building opportunities for those affected by pulmonary hypertension to be involved in solutions to the challenges the illness creates.
PHA’s Public History internship offers students with a strong interest in liberal arts and humanities the opportunity to creatively explore the evolution of a non-profit organization. PHA began as a gathering of four patients around a kitchen table in Florida, and within 18 years has grown to an association of over 40,000 members and allies while staying true to its grassroots principles. This internship will be instrumental in crafting enduring materials that effectively portray PHA’s unique history to members of the PH community and colleagues within the non-profit field.
Interns will:
• review archived materials – publications and organizational documents – to determine defining moments throughout PHA’s history
• view and analyze existing footage from interviews with leaders in the PH community
• prepare for and conduct supplemental interviews with community members – PHA Board members, medical leaders, staff members, and beneficiaries of PHA programs and services
• create a system for cataloging information
• lay the groundwork for creation of an oral history DVD; work with PHA’s President to craft the script and themes addressed through this material
• assist in bringing PHA’s existing written history through the present day
• receive a small stipend and free parking
• work 25-40 hours/week (schedule is flexible)
