Q&A: When I begin applying for jobs and college, will I have to lie about getting psychiatric treatment?
Question by Jessica: When I begin applying for jobs and college, will I have to lie about getting psychiatric treatment?
I’m currently 14 and I’m in therapy, on meds, have been in a psych hospital, etc. When I start applying for jobs and college, should I lie? I read all about the stigma, and how ex-convicts have a better chance of getting the job than ex-mental patients, etc.

If you are in the US, it’s probably illegal for a company to pry into your medical background. There is no need to disclose this information, unless you are applying for a job where that is legal criteria. You can get specific information about employment law at http://www.eeoc.gov. This is a government site that outlines what is legal and illegal criteria for employment.

As long as you take the meds and are stable, there is no reason for a future college or employer to know about your situation. There is no question on the application about your medical history.
There is a law called the Americans with Disability Act that can provide you with accomodations if you need it. For example: if your condition is heightened by chaos, this would allow for you to work in a quiet office. Again, if you don’t tell them, they won’t know unless you appear unstable.
