Do you think most college graduates can’t find jobs because most hiring managers think they are overqualifed?
Question by Rmm58: Do you think most college graduates can’t find jobs because most hiring managers think they are overqualifed?
Do you think managers will not hire a graduate applicant only to have the applicant leave the job for a better job? Do college degrees hurt instead of help?

I graduated in 2008, and that summer I had a very difficult time finding work. I applied to everything from office jobs to starbucks, but the retail/food jobs said I was over qualified. I lucked out and found an office job (which has nothing to do with my degree), but it was very stressful and frustrating.

I worked very hard to get three degrees, two in science, one in music. I took so many extra classes (especially in one field) that I ran out of classes to take. I walked out of school, took six weeks to rest, then went out and landed a great job for first job out of school. I’ve now received a number of raise and promotions. All because I worked hard, learned hard, and do my damnest to do a good job.
On the other hand, most of the people whom I went to school with (men and women alike, and between two major universities, one private, one public) barely paid attention in class, did the minimum that they could to get a passing grade, got bombed every other night, hopped beds between getting bombs, generally partied and blew money (mostly their parents’ money) away with the intent that all they needed to have in order to get a good job (one with ridiculous expectations) was to walk into a company, wave a piece of paper announcing some kind of degree, and make it as high-power, high-paid, low-work professionals right out the door.
No one will not hire you for being overqualified unless you make it very clear that you have expectations of rising more quickly than is reasonable, or getting anything more than common starting salary or wages.
GET A COLLEGE DEGREE! This goes double if you want to get ahead in any field like science or engineering.

Some places will say your over qualified, but those places are like coffee shops and fast food and stuff. They see you have a nice degree and assume you’ll leave as soon as you find something better, which is true, so instead of wasting their time they don’t hire you. But also, college degrees aren’t as good as they used to be. So many people have degrees now, you really have to go get a masters and phd to have much worth in alot of fields.
