I wouldn’t recommend it during your freshman year, because you are busy adjusting to being in college, but I’ve had a number of students do their first internships during the summer after their first year. You probably won’t get credit for more than one or two, but I strongly recommend that students these days do as many internships as possible, because there are so few jobs out there that employers can be very picky when hiring, and having had a few years of experience in the field can be very useful.

As soon as you feel comfortable with your living situation it should become a top priority, especially in fields which readily offer internships to undergrads. Make sure you always put your classes first though.

I started interning the summer after my freshman year. It helped me get an internship during my sophomore year of college and now I have an extra year of research compared to most people in my major.
