Is community service the same as volunteering? Are internships the same as community service? I need to do like 40 hours of community service for my high school. At the same time, I want to make a little bit of money, so is doing a internship counted as community service?

Volunteering is community service. someone explained it to me like this – volunteering is anything you don’t get payed for.

An internship is done for ecperience, and ususally for credit from your school or univeristy. Community service is supposed to be something that you do to service your community and should be an unpaid actvity. Your school should however give you the exact requirements. 40 hours is not a lot of hours either and an internship is generally 300 hours and up.

If you are getting paid it is not community service. However, volunteer work can look very good on a job or college application. Good places to try for community service: the humane society as a dog walker, local food bank, charity thrift store, Big Brother/Big Sisters, Boys & Girls Club. Most communities have a volunteer center and your school should also have a list of reccomended organizations to contact.

Unless it’s court ordered, community service is usually a voluntary activity such as helping out with an animal shelter, reading or writing letters for disabled veterans, or joining in on a city park cleanup. Internships are self-serving as you get paid, you get a foot in the door with a possible future employer and only you and a private firm benefit.

To volunteer means to act of your own free will without external compulsion (or monetary gain). Internships are usually done in exchange for credit, experience or a stipend. You can do a volunteer internship, however you can’t receieve payment for a service and consider it volunteer work. When I was in high school, I worked for a local non-profit and was paid for 20 hrs/week. I often worked more than 20 hrs. in a week and was able to log some of those extra hours as community service toward my academic requirements. This may be a possibility for you. Look for an organization that will employ you part time and then volunteer your services beyond what you are reimbursed for. This way your time can go towards community service hours and financial gain.

Community service is not paid, that’s why its called community service and not a job. An internship is not the same thing . Math must not be your best subject… you have to do 40 hrs of comm. serv. that’s one week.You most likely have over ten weeks of summer vacation. You can easily do the 40 hrs either in one block or in smaller chunks and work to earn money also.
