Should I wait to see if an employer is going to hire me or take the unpaid internship for 6 weeks?
Question by jloo617: Should I wait to see if an employer is going to hire me or take the unpaid internship for 6 weeks?
I recently graduated and yesterday I had an interview w/ a company I’ve heard great things about for an internship for six weeks- they called and offered the internship to me today and want me to start Tuesday. The internship is unpaid. But unfortuantly they said they cannot garuntee me a job at thier facility after the internship, I hear they pay above average though. Today I had an interview w/ another company that is willing to train me and pay me right from the day I start but the pay is below average, they havn’t offered me the position yet, they said they will be hoping to make a decision in about a week. Both companies have excellent insurance and benefits. What should I do, take the unpaid internship or wait and take the chance on the job?

Take the unpaid internship if you can afford it. If you are good they will usually hire you. They don’t want to take a chance on hiring you if you are not good. You can always quit the internship if you get the paid job and want it more.

Be patient and get all the information before you decide. Hope you asked the right questions about your future at these places. If not, go back and find out where the positions can lead.

Taking the internship doesn’t have to rule out the other company. There is bound to be a time lag between when they make a decisionand when they will be ready for you to start work. You might be get them to delay the start date if you explain the situation.
If they absolutely want you to start before your six weeks is up, then give your notice to the internship company. Believe me, since the internship is unpaid, the company is likely very used to their interns leaving before their time is up once a paying gig is found. Of course, you will likely not get much (if any) of a reference, but on the other hand, you don’t need one since you already are going into another job.

take the internship.
first decide if the inter ship will be beneficial ie. will it provide experience that might be useful for jobs in other companies as well.after all you don’t have to take the job after the internship if you don’t want to.
besides it is only six weeks.that is nothing compared to the higher pay that you will be getting.
but there are lot of other things to consider as well.
NO two companies are alike.
The company that you say will offer lower starting pay might increase your salary after sometime while the other company might not.
also see which company offers the better learning opportunity and better work environment.
then decide.
good luck.

Internship without a doubt.
Any company that pays above average wants a mechanism to screen out non-performing employees. Internship is an ideal way to do that.
Just make sure that you wow ‘em!
Good luck!
