Unemployment benefits while doing an unpaid internship in California?
Question by Amy: Unemployment benefits while doing an unpaid internship in California?
I am currently receiving unemployment benefits in California after being laid off. I am considering taking an unpaid internship that will help me learn new skills and hopefully find a better job. Can I continue to receive unemployment benefits while I am interning? Does anyone know for sure? I’ve seen other questions about this topic on this board, but no one has had a firm answer. Has anyone actually tried doing this? How do you fill out the unemployment form? Thanks!!

This is a complex question can you do it yes kinda.
First you must inform unemployeement and tell them you plan on doing this, usually they will let you sometimes they will give you more $$ sometimes less but you do need to declare it all and you will most likely have a different check amount,
The amount will be dependant on how much $$ your making now and what they access your needs at.
I’m over 90% sure I’m correct, I’m not 100% framiliar with california but I know in most states thats how it works

Talk to your unemployment office, in some states you would not be able to do this as you would not be available for work while doing an internship. Also many internships are reserved for college students.
