Why is it good to have an internship during college?

For example, my major is business management. If I had a year of an internship how would that help me? Do people ever get paid for internships? I’m contemplating talking to the owner of a florist shop and seeing what I can do. Any suggestions of what I should tell them?

Internships are useful in college for two reasons:
1.) College classes rarely prepare you for the high level work that is asked of employees whom have higher education degrees, internships give you practical knowledge of the various machinations of business.
2.) It allows you to network with the business community, alot of times people whom intern out to a corporation are guaranteed a job with them after graduating.
Most times nowadays people do get paid roughly 10-12 an hour for internships, depending on the state. For an internship I would go to a larger corporation, local florist shops will only help you if you intend to open your own business upon graduating.

internships give you a heads up over others in that you have begun to work in a professional environment while still in school. if your lucky an internship may help shape what your final course of studies might be as you get a chance to try out different aspects of your major. If you are working for a large company you most likely will get paid. if you are working for a non profit using your buinsess skills chances are you will be used more as a volunteer, but it all depends. if you have a chance to get one do it. the extra work is worth it

1. Most of the time what you actually do at a real job isn’t what they teach you at school, internships prepare you just for that.
2. It increases your “Market Value” as an employee when you’re applying fo ra job because you already have experience.

I agree with what the others said.
But look for an internship in a field you want to work in in the future. IF working for a florist or small box retailer is your goal then put together a resume of your school work (and any previous relevant past employment) and give it to them ……. and a way to contact your internship advisor on campus who can explain what hosting an intern is all about. You want to be sure you wont just be a gopher. You want to learn things.. make a list of the things you want to gain from the experience and make sure they can offer that.
If your ultimate goal is to work for a financial planning company or stock trading…whatever.. then dont waste your time at a florist. Ask your academic advisor for assitance placing you where you WANT to be. It will be easier to get the job you want after grad. if you plan carefully now. An internship is usually not paid but you have to think of it as an investment… after graduation if you have good experience you will land a better job with better pay.
