Will Fafsa pay me if I do a semester long, unpaid internship?
Question by : Will Fafsa pay me if I do a semester long, unpaid internship?
I know that Fafsa generally pays for living expenses when attending college for a regular semester while taking at least 12 credit hours. However, what happens if I decide I want and need to do a semester long internship that is unpaid and doesn’t offer housing? Does anyone know for sure whether or not they would still supply me with living expenses because my internship will most likely be a 40 hour work week?

In order to get financial aid at your school (by filling out the fafsa) you must be a college student enrolled in a college class. To get student loans you have to be enrolled at least half time.
It is highly unlikely you will be able to find a college class that requires you to work a 40 hour a week internship because if you are working a 40 hour a week internship you aren’t likely going to be able to be a half time college student.
Financial aid doesn’t always provide people with enough aid for living expenses, it just depends on how expensive the school is that you choose and the types of aid you qualify for. Student loans have a max amount you can borrow no matter how expensive your school is so some folks who choose very expensive or out-of-state schools get no money for living expenses… except maybe a parent PLUS loan.
