What are the best internship/work opportunities for an upperclassman pursuing a BA in Theatre?
Question by : What are the best internship/work opportunities for an upperclassman pursuing a BA in Theatre?
I am looking for opportunities to get experience (acting preferably) in the professional theatre community before pursuing a Graduate program in New York. If anyone has any information or recommendations on internship opportunities or professional work for non-equity actors (especially in the Philadelphia or New York areas) I would appreciate it!

There are no such things as internships in acting. If you are an upperclassman, you should have a resume. Get a head shot and try to get some acting work. Professional means equity. A non equity actor can get an equity job via an agent or open audition (of which there are few). If they are not teaching you how to become a professional actor, you BA program ain’t worth beans.

I would recommend simply auditioning for things. If you are already in NYC, there will be a plethora of audition opportunities. Get yourself a copy of backstage magazine and start going on as many auditions as possible.
However.
If you do feel the need to do an acting internship, I would suggest the program at Milwaukee Rep. They are one of the last companies to still employ a resident acting company. Members of their internship program are able to work alongside the seasoned resident actors. (http://www.milwaukeerep.com/season/internactors.php)
I would also suggest looking at the program at the Shakespeare Theatre Company in DC (http://www.shakespearetheatre.org/education/training/internships/fellowships.aspx) and PCPA in California (http://www.pcpa.org/Default.asp?Page=82)
