I left a paid for an unpaid and I got unemployment and did fine. The unpaid was better for me.
If money isn’t an issue and you will get more out of the unpaid internship, then take it. Just say that an opportunity for an internship that pertains to your college major has made itself available and you’d like to accept it. I asked if they needed a few weeks to get someone else into my current position. I did his for my chiropractic internship and learned so much at the unpaid and employers were impressed!
My best advice in an internship is: Observe, take notes learn as much as you can. Ask for more work to do. Make sure to meet get peoples business cards. Most of all do a great job, even if they ask you to sweep the floor.
