Public Policy and Advocacy Internship

The Public Policy and Advocacy (PPA) Intern will assist the Associate for Immigration and Refugee Policy by conducting research regarding refugee situations, asylum processes, country conditions, immigration entries, detention facilities, etc. S/he will analyze legislation to prepare policy briefs for legislative staff, affiliates, denominations, and coalition partners. The PPA Intern will also plan events, attend strategy sessions, help craft advocacy messages, participate in Congressional meetings, and draft minutes, fact sheets, letters, action alerts, research briefs, and media advisories. S/he will also be involved in the development and operations of grassroots capacity building and will direct two other interns to assist in these efforts. The PPA Intern will be required to maintain a portfolio and design a final project.

Foundation Fundraising Intern

American Farmland Trust (AFT) is seeking a part-time development intern (10-20 hours/week, schedule flexible) to assist the Foundation Relations team during the Spring 2009 semester (beginning and ending dates flexible). While at AFT, the intern will have the opportunity to work with a supportive and cordial Foundations team on a variety of projects, and will learn about multiple facets of foundation fundraising. The position is essentially administrative. The intern will be helping behind-the-scenes to cultivate our foundation donors. Different aspects of the work may include identifying and researching prospective donors; reviewing and documenting information on foundations supporting AFT; preparing correspondence to funders; coordinating mailings; and researching supporting data (i.e. statistics and news clippings) to enhance proposals. This position is located in our Washington, DC office (near Farragut North/DuPont metros, walking distance from The George Washington University).

Publishing Assistant

Intern will spend most of their time writing, fact-checking, copyediting, and working with their assigned editor on character development, plot, and story details, possibly in the acquisitions process. Other work will include general office duties such as filing, organizing, and phones, but most of their time will be devoted to the manuscripts. Intern will be required to come into the office weekly during agreed upon hours, but may be able to take work home to complete.
