Question by mellie1959: When is the best time to send out resumes for a summer internship position?
I am a college junior majoring in broadcast journalism and public relations. I need to secure an internship for next summer and wonder if I can send out resumes now or wait until January.

I’d suggest waiting ’till January, but you can surely do research (ie what companies of interest have internship programs, are they paid or for-credit, how does one apply, etc.) in the meantime.

what are some good paid internships abroad?

Question by Joshua Fears: what are some good paid internships abroad?
I am just looking for job internships overseas. I have degree in psychology, very good interpersonal skills and i am familiar with a lot of Indo-European languages. I found a few openings but they are volunteer work and many i have to pay 10,000 dollars for just 3 months abroad. Any ideas on internships that pay generally everything along with decent accommodations.

Hey Joshua,
The reason that you wont find many paid internships abroad is because most countries would simply hire local talent that will stick around with them for longer rather than foreigners. This is the obvious case in the U.S. and Europe because of the protective employment policies. So that narrows the search down for you to developing yet booming countries such as BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) who don’t have as strict employment policies because they are experiencing an abundance of jobs. Now unless you can commit to like 2 years or more, even the employers in these countries might not be willing to compensate you. In India for example, no foreigner is allowed to get paid for work unless they are making the equivalent of ,500 monthly paid by an Indian company. So Indian companies will generally hire a local who will work for 0 a month rather than have to dish out all that money to a foreigner who is only going to work for short-term anyway. Thus……you are left with doing unpaid internships. The only kinds of paid work you might be able to really find is Teaching English in S. Korea or China….but frankly that will do nothing for your career. I’m not trying to be negative but rather give you a better idea of what you’re dealing with. So now not only do you need to do an unpaid internship but you have to pay someone in order to do it. This may sound crazy but it’s because *someone* needs to find you a placement, organize your housing and food, be there as your safety net in case you get sick or something worse happens to you. A local company wont do all that for you…why should they when they can hire locals that need no maintenance, don’t have to look for their accommodation, and health, etc.? So this is where these third party organizations come in that help you get your internship placement, help with visas, help with picking you up at the airport, and being there for you for safety and health reasons. There is no reason you should be paying ,000 for 3 months…that’s ridiculous. But you should budget around ,500 for your placement, housing, food, and support system. Remember-you’d spend more than that in America or Europe per month anyway. I did an internship for 4 months in India last year which is why I know so much about it. If you’re looking to get paid-forget it. However, if you’re looking for good experience that will be invaluable to your career, your resume, and just an amazing life adventure….then you will find something easily. You can look at the cheaper option of Leave UR Mark, and they do set up placements in Psychology working with developmental disorders in children and adults. You can look at some of their projects and email them about the Psychology internship. Good luck! http://www.leaveurmark.com

Q&A: How do people transfer Colleges while on bad standing with current College?

Question by SF kid: How do people transfer Colleges while on bad standing with current College?
i went to comm. college for 2 years with almost a 3.0, then transferred to a California State University and got disqualified because of bad grades (i was sick, didn’t withdrawl).

almost all colleges i want to apply to say i need to be in good standing with your current college. can i only send my community college grades and act like i never transferred. or will they find out or is that ok?

They would definitely find out, and that is certainly NOT okay.

You may be aiming too high. I’m sorry to say it, but having a fairly low GPA and being disqualified at the junior level (most schools won’t disqualify you after just one semester – you usually get put on probation and have another chance, so if you were disqualified, I have to assume that you either did poorly for more than just one semester, or that you did SO poorly that there was no question of your being able to handle the work) just doesn’t leave you with many options. You will probably need to apply to a less-selective private university or college at this point.

This is how I would approach it. First of all, I’d find colleges which are more likely to accept you (those with enrollment problems are most likely to stretch their standards). Then I’d ask for a meeting with someone in the admissions office. Explain your illness to them (unless you were seriously ill, though, it will be hard to explain why you didn’t withdraw). Get references from people who know you well and who know that you are capable of doing much better than you did at the CSU and can attest to that. Hope that a personal intervention from your admissions counselor will help. I would also think about going into a major very different from the one you were in before. Doing the same thing at which you failed badly again might be seen as beating your head against the wall repeatedly. If you change directions, there is more hope that you could do better next time.

Good luck!
