I’m a college student looking for Internships, should I include irrelevant work experience on resumes?

Question by erifonz: I’m a college student looking for Internships, should I include irrelevant work experience on resumes?
I’m a college student in New York City. I came here for the Internship opportunities, but as I set up my online profiles and re-do my resume, i’m not sure if I should include irrelevant work experience such as working at a drug store or office supply store. I haven’t really worked anywhere that is similar to the types of internships in journalism, writing, or publishing that i’m looking for now. Any thoughts?

Well, if you don’t HAVE any relevant work experience then all you have to include is the irrelevant stuff, so if you took that out what would you be left with? Include it. Once you have some relevant experience, you can start pruning the irrelevant ones, or divide your work experience into two sections on your resume so you can highlight the most relevant jobs without leaving off the less relevant ones.

Q&A: What kind of internships/work should I be doing…?

Question by Loose Like Wizard’s Sleeve: What kind of internships/work should I be doing…?
What kind of internships/work should I be doing if I want to be a pharmacist? Right now, I am applying to internships at the NIH, etc for research. I don’t really want to be a researcher. Should I be working as a Pharm Tech?

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Feminist summer internships open to high schoolers in the NYC area?

Question by Carlotta: Feminist summer internships open to high schoolers in the NYC area?
I really want to do a feminist internship this summer, but it needs to be in the NYC area and open to high schoolers. I tried NOW-NYC and NOW-NYU and they both said no, NARAL doesn’t have anything open, and I don’t know who else to turn to. I tried Lilith and they didn’t respond, a few other places didn’t respond too. Anyone else know of other feminist summer internships I could do?

Sorry, most feminist discussions are strictly 18+.

Anyone know what college internships pay in the Northeast?

Question by Michael H: Anyone know what college internships pay in the Northeast?
I am not an intern. I am an employer and want to offer something fair, not stingy, but not too over the top to a person we selected. My research showed that for general bus admin type summer intern positions are about -10 per hour. This is for a person pursuing a 2 yr degree who has not finished it. Any info would be appreciated. Also, are they usually hourly or weekly?

At my internship a few summers ago, I was paid /hour. This was in the midwest, and was the highest I had ever seen an intership pay at my school. I figure after a few years, and in a higher cost of living area, /hour in the nourtheast should be fine. I was paid hourly, as I worked extra hours during breaks & holidays.
