Is community service the same as volunteering? Are internships the same as community service? I need to do like 40 hours of community service for my high school. At the same time, I want to make a little bit of money, so is doing a internship counted as community service?

Volunteering is community service. someone explained it to me like this – volunteering is anything you don’t get payed for.

Internships usually last three to four months. Summer internships may be as short as 2 months. I doubt many last longer than 6 months, because if they’re paid that would pretty much make it a job and if it isn’t paid you wouldn’t want to be working for that long for nothing.

Here’s a very big tip: Don’t say or do anything to tick off your employeer, even if advised so by a professor.

Question by Hassan: How are hotel internships in Barcelona?
I am planning on travelling to Europe, my ticket is booked for October 2nd, and i return on Jan 6th. I was hoping to do a hospitality/tourism exchange and work with a hotel, in exchange I get room and board and a small salary. Has anyone ever tried one of these internships before?? IT seems really appealing and seems like it would help keep costs low.

To work at a hotel in Barcelona, you might have to be trilingual in Spanish, English and Catalan.

Question by Kaiser Wilhilm: How lenient are background check agencies on unpaid internships?
I did an unpaid internship for my dad’s business about 3 years ago. I am being background checked right now and they asked for the W2/paycheck stub for this internship. I am inclined to tell them it was for my dad’s business and unpaid, but just the fact that unpaid internships are “technically” illegal here makes me a little worried. Are background check agencies usually lenient on this sort of things?

A background check is a background check. They just report facts they find to the organization that hires them to do the check. First of all, it’s not necessarily illegal for an internship to be unpaid, and secondly as long as you told the truth about it there’s no problem.
