I just finished the first year in college, and I’m studying for geophysics to be a petroleum geology.

How and where can I get involved in internships, community service, and other free work related to geology that I can later put on my resume?

Check your state government website. My state has internships in its environmental offices, and it’s a way to get your foot in the door, at least. Also ask your advisor or other geosciences faculty member. They probably know how to apply for internships in your area.

I guess you could join a business related club. Also, you might want to become close to a few of your business profs. If you become close with your profs, they can help suggest, and if they’re especially helpful, they can set you up with internship and job opportunities. One of my friends profs directed him towards an internship opportunity and my friend ended up landing the internship.

Q&A: What jobs does a college degree in the arts qualify one for?

Question by David G: What jobs does a college degree in the arts qualify one for?
I have a Ghahianian (from Ghana) fiancee’ who has a college degree in “General Arts.” What jobs would that qualify her for?

Best answer:

Answer by CanProf
It doesn’t qualify you for a specific job. But it does indicate that you are a serious and educated person. It will be up to your fiancee to hustle around applying for a variety of jobs that she thinks she can do and make a good case for herself. Don’t worry too much about the list of “qualifications” in job ads — they are wish lists by employers who know full well they are unlikely to find somebody with all of them.

Good luck.

Have you gone to your college’s career center? That’s who heads it up at the university I’m at. In order to be eligible, students must have completed 21 credit hours of core/major classes prior to the internship (basically just juniors and seniors). The school sets it up for you. All you have to do is fill out some paperwork and show up. I’m sure yours does the same.
