What are your thoughts on programs that you pay to get internships?

Question by Christy K: What are your thoughts on programs that you pay to get internships?
I am graduating in May and want to do internships for a year before considering grad school. I have been looking for internships. There are some programs that you pay and they set you up with an internship and provide professional guidance. The one I am looking at is Washington Internship Program. Please let me know if you think this is worth it or just a waste of my money.

This appears to be honest although you can never tell. It is also very expensive. As you are I would be very cautious using any agency that you pay to get you a job. If a company wants an employee they feel that an agent who is working for them will do a better job than one working for the candidate.

My feeling is that you would be better off on your own. Use the facilities at your college, talk to people around the university, and do a lot of net surfing. Many professors have arrangements with companies to supply interns and/or graduate students.

How do people find jobs right out of college?

Question by Daniel: How do people find jobs right out of college?
Hello, my question is how do people find jobs right out of college? Silly question, I know, but it seems like people out of college always have jobs and I feel like theyre not using any of these job sites like monster or anything…so how are they getting them? My brother is a high level sales manager and has unfortunately been laid off a couple times in the past five years, but he always just has another job he’s interviewing for right around the corner. How do these jobs just pop up for him and others?

If you choose the right major, the jobs are easy to find.

Most libraries have this soft cover book published by the federal dept. of labor. It lists all jobs in the US along with lists of top 100 jobs that will be in demand over the next 10 years, the jobs with the worst demand, etc.

I looked in this book. Looked at the top 10 jobs that would be in demand and choose special education. Completed college with an MA in SpEd and went to work right away and have never been without a job.

Without job planning as I just described, you have to have a good personality and make a good impression along with networking so that if you do need a job, you have people to call who are willing to recommend you.

If you attend college, I would go to the career services center for local internships.

Otherwise, try these sites:

Q&A: When I begin applying for jobs and college, will I have to lie about getting psychiatric treatment?

Question by Jessica: When I begin applying for jobs and college, will I have to lie about getting psychiatric treatment?
I’m currently 14 and I’m in therapy, on meds, have been in a psych hospital, etc. When I start applying for jobs and college, should I lie? I read all about the stigma, and how ex-convicts have a better chance of getting the job than ex-mental patients, etc.

Best answer:

UPS hires college students for package handlers at their facilities. They usually start at around .50 an hour, but could possibly go up to twelve. A friend of mine did this. The good part about it is they will even give you tuition assistance. They normally schedule ppl for 4 hour shifts starting at about 5:30 or 6:30 in the evening, but they probably would be willing to give you additional hours if you request it. Also, not sure if you’re interested in this or not, but a lot of retail stores need overnight stockers (especially Walmart) to put new items out on the shelves. This is normally a 3rd shift job.
