Question by Lauren: Is there a place where you can get summer film internships without being offered college credit?
I am currently in college, but only at a community college and I dont think they have the program where they would except the credits from a summer internship that offers them as actual credits and I really want to look into a film internship or some sort of job just for the summer.
Any place where I can just look around?

I’m currently attending a community college to complete my general education. I’m aiming to go for engineering in a 4 year college, perhaps even a polytechnic university.

Anyways, what do 4 year colleges or universities look for on a transcript, grades or credit? Or are they essentially the same?

This fall 2010 was my first ever semester in college. I got 4 A’s (Chemistry, Trigonometry, English, French 1) and 16 credit total (more than 12 credit is considered full-time in this particular college).

Credits. Sadly the 4 year school will drop some of your credits because each school has a different way of teaching. You will have to earn some of them back so make sure you contact the 4 year school to see what courses you need to take at the community school that will transfer to the 4 year school.

I would love to take a 8-12 credit hour internship over the summer for my B. English degree to limit my semesters to one left intstead of two. My school honors internships, how should I go about finding one with a lot of credit hours?

You need to talk to career services or your advisor. The number of credits for an internship is determined by the university, not the internship placement.

I would be very surprised if you could get that many credits for an internship, but it really depends on your school’s policy.

Why do some internships require college credit?

I recently graduated with a degree in magazine journalism. I’m ready to get my foot in the door by any means necessary- even unpaid internships. So why, oh WHY, for so many (especially Conde Nast) is college credit a requirement?

The application states “you MUST be able to receive college credit.” I know they say that.. but is there any way to get around it?

Perhaps that’s their way of ensuring that they get a steady supply of gophers……er, interns…….without feeling pressured at the end of the internship to hire them. Those magazines jobs are highly sought after, which puts the magazines in the position of being able to make whatever rules they choose. Why not apply anyway (since you’ve got nothing to lose) and make your case that you’ve got your degree, but would welcome the opportunity to gain some practical experience before tackling the job market?
