I’m 14 and I am currenty doing an internship at MGM on their websites.(i hold the record for youngest “employee” of MGM corporate). anywho, its open ended so ill stay there for as long as the want me, but i know that colleges sometimes (if not usually) look for more than one internship. what are some ideas that look interesting or good for college or careers?

Try getting anything that is in the field that you want to study. Join clubs in school, they look good as well.

My husband recently entered a Research Internship with a Professor at the local University. However, this internship is unpaid, and is only directly related to the Professor’s ongoing Research, and has no direct ties to the University itself. How do you add this to work experience on a resume?

Identify skills you or your husband acquired by your/his participation in these experiences and label those skills according to the skills headings used in the job descriptions; in other words, he has to translate his internship duties into the headings of his resume.

I’m trying to update my resume with my new internship. It’s unpaid. Would this go under the category of ‘Work Experience’ or ‘Volunteer Experience’? Or should I make a whole new section for internships?

I worked the last 2 months of my college program at a company for unpaid internship, then was offerred a 3 month contract position at the same company. How do I list this on my resume since part of it was unpaid internship for school and another part was a real job for contract?

Explain it briefly and concisely just as you did just now. Remember that a resume, while a formal document, shouldn’t be so rigid that you can’t explain things that need to be explained.

For instance:

WORK HISTORY

ABC Corporation, June 2009-June 2010. I cleaned test tubes, operated spectroscopic test equipment, and answered customer requests for a company that performed genetic testing. The first eight months of this job was as an intern through Columbia University. In April 2010, based on my strong performance, ABC Corporation converted my internship to paid employment.

You can play with the words, but you get the idea…

I am in high school and i want to either become a doctor or a dentist and i was wondering what volunteer work or jobs look good on a college resume…..i also tutor this kid…is that good on a college resume? thanks in advance

Long term commitments such as Habitat for Humanity, Hospital Aide, Coaching little league or participating in Special Olympics. Tutoring will not impress the admissions office when others have much more impressive lists

ideally you would have done some more relevant work experience than maccy ds or wal mart, that kinda work experience should really only be a last resort, and if you do put that on you have to makesure you demonstrate that it helped you gain transferrable skills, eg communications skills, leadership initiative etc. basically bs.

Usually Ivy League schools look for community service and other school activities like sports ext.

I graduated last September and have had two jobs since then. I am applying for freelance work, and now I am wondering where to put my internships on my resume. I put those under the heading “relevant experience” with my other job experience under “work history” when I first graduated. I have heard that internships don’t count as experience though. Is it appropriate to put the internships under experience with my post-graduate jobs?

Yes, it is appropriate to put the internships in work history / work experience if they are related to the job you are currently seeking. If they are not related (in any way whatsoever), you can put it under “other experience”.
